Morpeth Town 1-0 Marine Tuesday 12th December 2023

Match report by Dave McMillan

Marine’s five match unbeaten run came to end on Tuesday night, when they were beaten 1-0 on a rain lashed evening in the North East.

The game was overshadowed by a serious looking knee injury to goalkeeper Felix Goddard who left the field on a stretcher and was subsequently taken to hospital – all at the club wish him a speedy recovery.

The first half was lacking in chances and in truth much quality, as both teams struggled to adapt to the inclement conditions.

Marine had slightly the better of the opening exchanges with Connor Evans going closest for the Mariners, but home custodian Dan Lowson was off his line quickly to snuff out the danger.

Morpeth were dangerous down the left flank and forced several corners, most of which were well delivered in to good areas and led to the opening goal after 23 minutes, Sam Hodgson’s clever flick going in off the post.

The Mariners changed formation in the second half and began to dominate possession, getting in to several good positions but not forcing Lowson in to any stretched saves until late on, Owen Robinson and Sol Solomon both bringing good saves from the gloveman.

Morpeth defended resolutely and came close to grabbing a second goal on the break, Nic Bollado popping up with a rising drive from the left which brought a great save from substitute goalkeeper Richie Cowderoy.

The Mariners return to the MTA on Saturday when they take on Gainsborough Trinity (3pm).
