Marine FC are delighted to confirm the signing of midfielder Leigh Whelan for the 2024/25 season following his departure from Guiseley AFC.
The Irishman started his youth career in England with Chesterfield after making the trip across the Irish sea alongside his close friend, today’s other new Marine signing, Kallan Murphy. The pair also represented Guiseley together over the past two seasons.
The midfielder made 35 league appearances for the Lions last term.
Manager Neil Young said: “When we lost Jack Bainbridge to Chester, our attention quickly turned to Leigh as he was someone who had impressed us in that role in midfield previously.
“He fits how we play and again he is a young player with an excellent profile and is very keen to come in and do well.”
Leigh said: “My first thought on joining Marine is that it’s a club that’s on the up and we want to try help it stay that way. I’m really looking forward to meeting all the lads and getting going in pre season.
“We know the club pretty well played against them five times in the last two seasons. It’s always been a tough and organised team to play against.
“Neil told us where he wants to take the club and I think we’re the same in our football careers want to keep progressing so think it’s a good fit.
“He didn’t have to tell us much – we knew about the club and when he got in contact it always looked like it was going to happen. We know the fans here are amazing and can’t wait to play in front of them.
“I just like to keep it simple, get on the ball and throw in a few tackles.
“The aim this season has to be fighting for the play-offs, the club has momentum. We just need to keep that going with a good start to the season.
“I just can’t wait to meet all the lads and the fans.”
