Tom Murphy reports from the Map Group UK Stadium…

Marine fell at the first hurdle in the FA Cup as Stockton forced a 3-2 defeat on Neil Young’s side.

Goals from Owen Robinson and Chanka Zimba were not enough for the Mariners as plenty of other chances went amiss.

The home side came out quick and instantly put Marine on the back foot.

A foul on the edge of the area conceded by James Butler resulted in him entering the referees book.

The foul committed lead to the first goal of the game, a wonderful powerful but directed strike from Glen Butterworth rifled past a helpless Luke Hutchinson who wasn’t able to get enough on the ball as it swooped into the top left corner.

Marine responded positively as they looked to equalise before the first half concluded.

Forward Robinson came close twice as the 21 year old smashed the woodwork on two occasions.

Whilst the number 10 may have thought it wasn’t going to be his day, luck finally favoured him as he grabbed the equaliser for his side seconds before the interval.

A lovely lofted ball from Joe Mattock fell to the feet of Robinson who took a superb first touch before guiding the ball into the left side of the net.

The hosts took the lead again after the 59th minute thanks to captain Tom Coulthard.

A corner was whipped into the box and found the head of the number six who effortlessly nodded home his side’s second.

Michael Fowler then capitalised on Marine’s incapability to clear their lines and smashed home a third for his team after 66 minutes.

Debutant Zimba got one back in the 77th minute but it was too little too late for Marine as the home side began to kill the game off in the dying stages.

Marine now return their focus to the National League North where they travel to Brackley Town on Saturday.
