Hereford 2-1 Marine; Enterprise NLN; Tuesday 21st April 2026
Adam Yates reports from a jubilant Edgar Street as Hereford continued their seemingly impossible great escape at the expense of Marine with a dramatic injury time penalty that proved the difference.
Bobby Grant and the Mariners were left perplexed following several controversial refereeing decisions, particularly the two apparent yellow cards for the same Bulls defender not resulting in the mandatory red card.
Three points were desperately required by the Herefordshire club who had spent all of 2026 in the drop zone thus far and the first half showed a fair amount of nerves for the home side. As for Marine, they also had not pressured the keeper but had penalty claims waved away when George Newell was bundled over in the box.
If the first half was a disappointment, the second was anything but. A cross by half time substitute Keziah Martin in the 52nd minute was caught by Cormac Daly who appeared to control it via the arm, entered the box and finished past Fraser Barnsley for the opener.
Marine found an equaliser 20 minutes later via Matty McDonald as he slotted away a goal on the left inside the box which sucked all the positive atmosphere out of the historic ground, hope turning into desperation as the clock ran into injury time and the voices of the 20 or so Mariners fans could be heard above the groans of the home attendees.
But Hereford deserved their nickname as the Bulls surged onto a back pass to Fraser Barnsley who couldn’t clear effectively and then was adjudged to have taken down his man in the box seconds later when a goal opportunity looked certain.
Barnsley escaped with a yellow card but was unable to prevent the following conversion from the spot by defender Aaron Skinner which sent the crowd into euphoria and a few eager fans onto the pitch.
Marine play their final game of the season away to Spennymoor this weekend with neither team able to affect the playoff spots.
