Adam Yates reports from PIMS Park as Marine overcame further injury woes and captured a point on the road on a Tuesday night for the first time since November. They held Peterborough Sports to a 0-0 draw which was low on chances but high on spirit and character.
The starting line up was eagerly anticipated due to the gaggle of walking wounded carrying over from Saturday’s win over Worksop Town but all the players who carried injuries remained in the squad. Due to prior commitments with the academy, Harry Huby and James Potter were absent from the bench that left only three players in the dugout before kick off.
As the first half found some momentum, the inevitable bad luck we have come to dread this season swirled around the Marine players and both Charlie Jolley and Sam Fielding felt that they could not continue. Lewis Bell and Jed Abbey made their way onto the field of play much earlier than anyone would have anticipated.
The game itself from beginning to end resembled table football, with either side unable to keep the ball for longer than a few seconds. Balls were peppered in by the hosts via the likes of Mliq Cadogan and Kaine Felix but were always captured in the air by Jack McIntyre, still relishing his opportunity in goal following Fraser Barnsley’s unfortunate concussion protocol.
For Marine, George Newell and Offrande Zanzala both did well holding up play in the middle and laying it up for the likes of Joe Ashton and Bell to get the balls into the box but it was largely a similar story in that the keeper was on hand to snuff the chances out.
Shots on target were few and far between, and the ones that did were largely routine for the two net men either side of the park.
Matty McDonald was the third (and final) player to enter the fray for Marine and gave them a definite spark near the end almost doubling their shots on target within seconds of coming on but due to the circumstances involved, ultimately it felt like a point gained rather than two lost as the hosts would feel the opposite needing maximum rewards to keep up their fight to survive in the NLN next season.
