Tom Clarke reports as four strikes beat the Pikes…
Marine made it 13 goals in their last three home games by overcoming Pickering Town 4-0 on a chilly Tuesday evening at the MTA.
The Mariners had just three days to recover from their big FA Cup Fourth Qualifying Round win at Chester for this one, but showed no signs of fatigue in a lively opening to the game.
Josh Hmami struck a free kick narrowly wide within the first minute, before Mo Touray sat his defender down to send Neil Kengni through one-on-one with away stopper Charlie Andrew, only to see the school-socked stopper get to it first.
Hmami saw another free kick drift inches wide within ten minutes, as the Marine pressure started to grow.
Kengni and Touray were the forwards who looked most likely to score in the opening exchanges, but centre-back Anthony Miley also went close with a header from a deep James Barrigan free kick.
For all of Marine’s chances, it was away defender Harry Ord who went closest to opening the scoring for the Mariners when he deflected a cross onto his own post and was relieved to see it cleared.
Josh Hmami made sure it was a player in black & gold to put Marine ahead on 25 minutes, striking past Andrew from the centre of the box.
Hmami and Josh Solomon-Davies went close to doubling the lead, but it was Touray who eventually did so on 43 minutes when dazzling his defender before curling the ball past a helpless Andrew from the edge of the box.
Pickering came out a determined side after their half-time team talk, and Wayne Brooksby would have pulled one back for the visitors if it weren’t for some strong goalkeeping from Bayleigh Passant.
Neil Kengni made it 3-0 on 62 minutes though, striking the ball on the volley to extend the Marine lead in beautiful fashion.
Just nine minutes later it was four when Niall Cummins, fresh from his BBC interviews, nodded in another from the middle of the box.
Cummins almost added a fifth late on when he saw another effort drift just wide of the post after reserves graduate Jack Murphy came off the bench for his senior debut, but the game ended 4-0 to top an almost perfect performance from Neil Young’s side.
They now turn their attentions back to cup competitions in the FA Trophy, where they host Stalybridge Celtic in a 3pm kick off this Saturday 31 October. Tickets can be purchased via the following link:
