Recap
Tom Murphy reports from Borough Park…
A brilliant performance from Marine saw them score three goals and collect all three points at Borough Park.
Goals from Bobby Grant, Owen Robinson and Josh Wardle secured the points for Neil Young’s team.
Marine remain in fourth with just two games remaining in the league this season after an emphatic victory.
The away team created the better of the chances between the two sides despite Workington enjoying long spells of possession in the opening minutes.
Robinson missed the first big opportunity of the half after he found himself in a great position in front of goal. Goalkeeper Jim Atkinson did well to block the ball with his chest and keep the score line level.
Another opportunity went begging when defender Sam Smith denied a Sol Solomon cross at the by line, the following corner posed no threat as the home side continued to keep the door shut.
The Mariners continued to pressurise the home side’s back line as we approached the interval and their patience finally paid off.
Grant tapped his side ahead after they had been knocking on the door in the early stages.
The forward was played in nicely by Robinson who had made a great run into the area and Marine took a deserved lead.
Neil Young’s side stayed on top for the majority of the second half and the remainder of the encounter.
Louis White saw his effort blocked by teammate Solomon after 49 minutes just before Marine were awarded a penalty after Grant was brought down in the area.
Robinson stepped up and coolly placed the ball past Atkinson and into the bottom left hand corner.
The Reds looked to respond instantly as a close effort from Ceiran Casson glanced wide of the post after Connor Tinnion’s delivery from a free kick.
Things went from bad to worse for Workington when Tinnion received two yellow cards inside just a few minutes.
The team with now ten men conceded once more in the 81st minute after they failed to clear their lines from a corner.
Captain Wardle retrieved the ball on the edge of the area and placed the ball into the bottom right corner after a low drilled strike.
Whilst the forwards will steal the headlines, a solid defensive performance set the tone. Scott Butler rarely put a foot wrong and kept the Workington forwards quiet along with his fellow defenders.
Marine’s focus now turns to the rearranged Liverpool Senior Cup tie against Prescot Cables on Tuesday evening.
