Adam Yates reports from a blustery Blackwell Meadows as Marine came from behind to beat Darlington 3-2 and dent the playoff hopes of the hosts, whilst keeping their own mathematically alive.
Goals from George Newell, Finlay Sinclair-Smith and an own goal made the difference in front of goal for the Mariners.
A direct free kick for the Quakers opened proceedings on the 13th minute as left back Scott Barrow cooly lifted the dead ball over the four man wall and past Fraser Barnsley at the near low post for a one goal lead.
Marine went level five minutes later via their own set piece. Joe Ashton whipped a free kick into the box from the left flank where Offrande Zanzala chested the ball into the path of George Newell who merely had to tap it either side of Pete Jameson for the equaliser.
On the 27th minute, Marine went ahead. Declan Drysdale passed across the danger area for Sinclair-Smith to pull off a trademark curler inside the area to pull ahead 2-1 and take the lead into the changing room at half time.
It was midway through the second half when Marine took advantage with a two goal buffer. Adam Anson cleared the ball into the midfield where Zanzala was waiting. The generous bounce and sheer physicality allowed the forward to punish his opponents and push forward towards the area.
At that moment, a last ditch attempt from the earlier goalscorer, Scott Barrow only directed the ball past Jameson and into his own net but the hard work was done by Zanzala who had done everything but apply the final touch.
Whilst manager Bobby Grant was waiting to make a defensive substitution, Marine were pegged back via Cedric Main capturing his 21st goal of the season via a close range downward header from a high cross in the box.
Marine however held on for another ten minutes for an important away win that keeps playoff hopes alive albeit highly dependent on other results in the next couple of weeks as well as their own.
Next up is another of the Mariners games in hand as they face another playoff contender, Merthyr Town at home this Tuesday.
