Marine 0-2 Chorley

Danny Stewart reports from the MTA…

Marine suffered a deeply frustrating 2-0 defeat to Chorley under the lights at the Marine Travel Arena. A self-inflicted first-half performance doomed the Mariners to another defeat, despite a second half resurgence that saw the hosts repeatedly denied by a stubborn away defence.

The Crosby faithful expected a strong response from the hosts. Instead, Marine handed Chorley the perfect start just two minutes into the game.

A clumsy challenge right outside the penalty box gave the visitors a cheap free-kick. Callum Rowe took full advantage, curling his shot past the wall and into the bottom corner.

Going down so early completely disrupted Bobby Grant’s tactical blueprint. Marine players grew anxious, rushed their passing, and struggled to threaten the opposition box.

The definitive blow arrived in the 27th minute. Rather than building patiently from the back, a highly uncharacteristic lapse in concentration and a build-up of poor play in the defensive third gifted the ball directly to Chorley’s midfield. Mike Calveley intercepted the stray ball and slotted it past goalkeeper Jack Barrett, despite the best efforts of James Butler to block the advancing midfielder.

Bobby Grant shifted personnel at the break to spark life into his attack, and Marine immediately began to ask questions of the visitors’ backline.

Just three minutes into the second half, the hosts missed a golden opportunity to pull one back. In the 48th minute, James Potter leapt brilliantly to win a commanding header, knocking the ball directly into the path of Sonny Hilton. Hilton found himself with space to strike, but his rushed effort flashed agonizingly wide of the target.

The hosts’ best opportunity of the regular 90 minutes arrived in the 64th minute. A well-delivered ball into the box found George Newell, who directed a clever downward header into the path of Fin Sinclair-Smith. The winger struck a powerful effort on the half volley, but a sea of Chorley bodies threw themselves in the way to block the shot and preserve the two goal lead.

As the clock ticked down, Marine continued to search for a lifeline. In the 84th minute, a lovely move saw Sonny Hilton, James Potter, and Fin Sinclair-Smith combine brilliantly down the Chorley left flank to force a corner. The set-piece found the leaping Declan Drysdale, but the defender could only direct his header wide of the post.

The Mariners continued to push and engineered one final golden opportunity deep into stoppage time. James Potter found space in the penalty area and unleashed a powerful, point-blank strike that looked destined to pull one back. However, Chorley shot-stopper Li-Bau Stowell produced an excellent save to deny Potter and preserve the visitors’ clean sheet.

The match slowly ebbed away into a thoroughly disappointing and disjointed evening under the floodlights. Marine must rapidly address these unforced defensive errors if they want to climb out of this early-season slump.
