Enterprise National League North Marine AFC are absolutely delighted to announce that Irish midfielder Leigh Whelan has put pen to paper on a new contract, securing his future at the club for the 2026/27 Enterprise National League North season.
The 24-year-old originally joined the Mariners from Guiseley in the summer of 2024 and has since established himself as the beating heart of the Marine midfield. Over the past two campaigns, Whelan has racked up an impressive 85 appearances, quickly cementing his status as a firm fan favourite and an indispensable figure on the pitch.
His impact was felt immediately during a phenomenal debut season, where his relentless work rate, tenacity, and technical brilliance saw him sweep the board at the end-of-season awards. Leigh proudly took home a historic treble, claiming the Manager’s, Players’, and Supporters’ Player of the Season accolades.
Securing Whelan’s services for another year represents a massive boost for the club as preparations for the 2026/27 campaign continue to gather pace. His commitment ensures that a vital piece of the puzzle remains at the MTA as we look to build on our recent progress and push forward in the Enterprise National League North.
