MARINE 0-2 GAINSBOROUGH TRINITY – MATCH REPORT

Tom Wardle Reports as Durose’s Double Defeats Mariners

Marine’s nine game unbeaten streak came to an end last night, when they were beaten 2-0 by Gainsborough Trinity in the Northern Premier League. Curtis Durose’s second half brace was the difference on the night in a game that was overridden with multiple injuries to both sets of players. The result leaves the Mariners in ninth place after conceding just their fourth loss in sixteen league games.

New signing Andy Scarisbrick was named amongst the substitutes following his move from Bootle. Meanwhile Luke Clark and James Barrigan stepped in for Josh Solomon-Davies and Sean Smith at fullbacks.

An early chance came for the hosts when Freddie Price fired in a wicked delivery from the flank. Alas the ball was slightly too far ahead of the incoming Charley Doyle and Lucas Weir.

Neither side produced any sort of quality in front of goal in the first half, with goalkeepers Bayleigh Passant and Matt Yates having to keep warm by themselves on a chilly evening at the Marine Travel Arena.

Marine’s only attempt on target in the opening 45 came when Lucas Weir won the ball back and moved it to Hayden Campbell. Campbell who had just come on for the injured Freddie Price tried a speculative chip that Yates had no problem in collecting.

Campbell and Weir linked up again after the interval. The latter’s cross into the box found the head of Campbell, but he couldn’t find the power and the visiting ‘keeper gathered.

The Mariners’ skipper Josh Wardle had to be switched on at two times of asking to get in the way of former EFL striker Clayton Donaldson who was hoping to add to his nine goals already scored this season.

The home side did put the ball in the back of the net minutes after the hour mark, though referee Nat Cox had blown his whistle before the goal for an earlier foul on the edge of the box.

Although it looked like Marine were starting to build some pressure, Gainsborough made the breakthrough. Liam Waldock’s through ball picked out Durose who still had work to do from a difficult angle. However he brilliantly bent the ball around Passant with the outside of his right boot to score.

The away team kept their unbeaten away record intact and made sure of it when Durose doubled his tally. The winger curled a ball towards the far corner that missed everyone in the box to find the net and take the three points back to Lincolnshire.

Marine will lick their wounds and prepare for a long journey to Morpeth Town on Saturday for a 3pm kick off.
