Marine started the New Year off with a bang as James Brown and Leigh Whelan secured all three points on the road in Warrington.
Two late first half goals in stoppage time were enough to come away with the points in what was a massive win for Neil Young’s side.
The game started quickly with both teams having chances early on. Josh Amis came close after a powerful strike from the Warrington captain was well blocked by Matty Corran.
Minutes later, Whelan let loose a strike on the edge of the area, his shot however was always rising and flew over the bar.
As the game progressed, lots of decisions began to start to go against Marine and frustrations grew as we approached half time.
A chance in the 41st minute fell to Enock Lusiama when he went for the spectacular after a cross was directed towards him. The Spaniard’s acrobatic effort was way wide of the untroubled Dan Atherton in goal.
Then, a quick fire double came for Marine in the dying minutes of the half. The first of these came when Whelan headed a ball back into the danger zone where a free Brown was able to convert his third of the season.
After assisting the first, Whelan found the back of the net after his free kick bypassed everyone and nestled into the far low corner of the net.
With Marine fans in full voice, Young’s team continued to pose a threat going forward as they hunted down a third heading into the second half.
After working the ball forward, the ball fell to Calum Agius who unleashed a shot from the edge of the area which glanced just past the right hand side post.
Warrington then began to gain control of the game as they looked to find a way back into the game in the latter stages. A resolute defensive line led by Josh Wardle ensured the home sides attackers were kept quiet.
With Marine still two in front with little time left, Young began to introduce his substitutes as Marine looked to see the game out.
Owen Robinson, who came on in the 83rd minute almost wrapped the game up after he was found superbly by Harvey Gregson in the penalty area. His shot was deflected behind for a corner, much to the frustration of the home side.
After a substantial victory on the road, Marine now sit three points behind their hosts on the day with a game in hand and now look to a big clash next week at home to Kidderminster Harriers.
