Former club Captain passes away…
Former defender and club Captain Wally Bennett has sadly passed away at the age of 80.
Wally joined the club from Skelmersdale United in 1971 and was a key member of the team for the remainder of the decade at centre half.
He played in Roley Howard’s first match at Stalybridge Celtic in August 1972 and also Marine’s historic first game in the Northern Premier League, at Runcorn in August 1979.
In the intervening years he was instrumental in the successes of Roley’s great teams of the 1970s, winning three Cheshire League titles, the Lancashire Junior Cup, the Liverpool Senior Cup, two Liverpool Senior Non-League Cups, two Cheshire League Shields and appearances in the FA Cup First and Second Rounds.
The club send their deepest sympathies to Wally’s family and friends and will confirm funeral details in due course.
