James signed from Warrington Rylands in summer 2024 on a one-year contract with an option for a second year.

The centre-back joined for an undisclosed fee following a strong year with Rylands in the Northern Premier League.

The player joined Rylands from Mickleover Sports in 2023 after coming through the youth ranks at Stoke City.

He is the son of former professional Tony Butler who made over 600 appearances in the Football League.

James missed most of the 2025/26 season after a broken leg in August, but returned to the squad in April to make a total of 9 appearances.

His Marine career appearances stands at 50, scoring three goals.
